The Terra cotta Army is one of the most famous and top attractions in China, because of its historical significance and uniqueness. It is significant because the hundreds of hand crafted terra cotta life size models represent the army that battled and triumphed over all other Chinese armies and who were the decisive factor in forming a united China.

The Terra cotta Army Museum lies two km east of the tomb of Qin Shihuang, known as the first Emperor, who unified China 2,200 years ago. Emperor Qin, from whom China gets its name, ordered the creation of this model army. The army is made from terra cotta which is a sculpting and decorative cladding material that is still used in today’s modern architecture and can be seen in cities across the globe.

The still standing terra cotta army in China proves this material’s durability and strength to stand the test of time. The Terra cotta army was discovered in March 1974 by a farmer. The Terra cotta army was found near the tomb of Emperor Qin Shihuang, which took 38 years and 720 thousand builders to complete. The Terra cotta army was buried for 2,200 years. So far, 1,868 terra cotta warriors and chariots have been unearthed.

It’s no wonder that terra cotta is still so widely used. Today, the art, skill and craftsmanship is practiced by just a few. A company named Shaws has been leading the way in the design and creation of terra cotta with a global client base and examples of work on some of the most prestigious buildings standing. Shaws has brought terra cotta back to life with their own unique products that mix wonderfully with other materials and mature beautifully with age.

Although Shaws are not commissioned to build modern day terra cotta armies, since 1892 they have supplied terra cotta for some of the finest buildings around the world. Recent projects include The Wrigley Building in Chicago and the Commonwealth of Kentucky State Capitol Building, to the elaborate designs of The De Barones shopping development in the Netherlands, amongst many.

Take a moment to review the outstanding designs and sculptures that Shaws have created via the links below within the resource section of this article.
