If you are looking for an alternative to Windows, Linux offers a great OS that has many features. It's reputation presents it as a computer programmers software, not something the mainstream can use - this is actually not true. What do you do on a computer everyday? Why would you need a new OS? These are questions you must ask before changing Windows out for Linux. Linux or Windows? Which one should you get? This article will help you make this decision in a logical decisive manner.

Since Windows programs have such limited compatibility to other systems, people are not sure about using Linux, but this can be overcome easily, according to their users. Emulator programs is something that will let you use Linux and have Windows programs running on it. Unless the computer has Windows installed on them, then most of the time these programs will not run nearly as fast. Furthermore, you may also have compatibility issues when trying to use other devices such as printers, digital cameras, flash drives and so on. To learn how to work Linux, some time will need to be invested, but that is what you will need, if you want to get Windows programs to run. As long as you don't mind being inconvenienced with the incompatibility, Linux has a lot of advantages, as long as you are ready for some learning. For most people, when they hear about Linux, they believe that it is essentially a worthless operating system. Even though this OS is not well known, many people use it and a variety of applications that work with this program. So the fact that you can't easily run Microsoft programs on this platform doesn't have to limit you. Although dissimilar from Windows software to some degree, Linux actually has e-mail and graphics programs, along with a host of games that can be played. Although these are not Windows applications, they are comparable in many ways. If you are working with people that are Windows-based, this can pose a variety of problems in regard to interaction with their computers.

A primary benefit of Linux is that you are able to both install it and run it on old computers. This makes it very unusual as far as operating systems go. It is a well known fact that computers become obsolete after just a few years and this is definitely true for any computer that runs on Windows or Macintosh systems. For example, because Windows has such high memory requirements, if you try to install it on a computer that is five years old, it will overload the system. Linux operating systems like Ubuntu Feisty Fawn, on the other hand, only require 64 MB RAM and 300mHz processors, and that is really tiny by standards now. What this means is that you are able to take an old computer out of a closet or buy one relatively cheaply, download Linux and have everything up and running pretty quickly.

Windows is well known, but Linux has many advantages although it may not be for the average user. If you are not technologically oriented, a.k.a. not a techie, then avoid Linux and keep using the Windows operating system currently on your computer. If you want to try it out, Linux is there for everyone. Just download a copy and give it a try today.
