When it comes to operating systems for most computers, except for people who like their Macintosh, according to most people, Windows is the only operating system that exists. Yet there's a whole community of people who prefer Linux, which is a free, open source operating system that anyone can download. By looking at both Windows and Linux, together, we will be able to tell what they have in common, as well as their differences.

There is a lot of flexibility with the Linux OS which is why many people prefer this system. Several different companies distribute the software which gives you a few choices in regard to this OS. Microsoft offers Windows exclusively, which is completely different than the Linux OS distribution. The personal computing industry is literally controlled by the Windows OS and few others can compete in the same way. As you know, Apple computers provide their Macintosh line exclusively through their company. Linux is completely different from Microsoft's Windows because it is open source, which allows individual companies and people to modify the program and disperse it in any way they see fit.

Windows is known for its ability to provide help when needed, especially if you are not adept at using the computer. As long as the version of Windows that you have is licensed, this is 100% true.

If your version is licensed, you can chat with the help desk, or even get e-mail support in a short amount of time. Throughout the world, Microsoft is known for its size and power. Due to the fact that Linux is not a commercial company, any help that you receive will be from online forums and other similar websites. Although Linux is a great OS, it lacks in regard to customer service. This is where Windows shines with its fast and effortless sources of information.

Linux is generally quite a bit more reliable than Windows. Every version of Windows that has ever been released has had problems in the system itself. The Windows operating system is known for crashing. Very few versions of Linux have ever crash, and it is far faster in regard to boot time than the Windows operating system. Although Linux has a lot less memory than Windows, it utilizes what it has more efficiently. The performance and speed of your system will definitely improve. With all of these benefits, you might want to consider using Linux over Windows, especially if you are very frustrated with the Microsoft OS.

In conclusion, there's no one best operating system for everybody. Neither Linux nor Windows have everything that people want. Everybody has their own likes and dislikes. You might like Linux, if you like knowing how things work on the inside. Simple and easy is the way most people want their computer experience, and that would make Windows their best choice.
