If you know someone who is suffering from low self esteem and want to help him, you will have to help him take due credit for his achievements. This does not mean constantly giving them compliments. On the contrary it may have a negative impact. You should try logic, and help him change his perception about himself. Those who suffer from low self esteem need to look at success a little differently. If these people do achieve success in some aspect of their lives, they tend to write it off as a stroke of luck or just give someone else the credit for their success.
You have to tell yourself that focusing on your own needs and dreams is not a bad thing. It is essential for every human being to look after oneself, not only physically but mentally and spiritually as well. When you are taking care of your emotional needs yourself, you are NOT being selfish. This is the first step in getting over a feeling of low self esteem. You are not hurting others in the process, you have to give yourself the freedom of living life on your own terms without feeling guilty about it.
The first thing you have to do in order to eliminate low self esteem is to treat yourself with respect. You cannot treat yourself like a lowly human being who is good for nothing. In order to help yourself you have to be kind to yourself. Treat yourself like a person whom you love and be as supportive to yourself as you would be to him/her. When you speak to yourself, do not be harsh and critical of your actions or behavior. That is degrading and gives rise to those exact feelings of low self esteem. Instead, try and analyze rationally about what exactly you feel is wrong with you, and what are the steps you can take to improve your situation.
Low self esteem emanates from a habit of focusing too much on yourself in a negative way. It can sometimes be an actual obsession, where you can keep getting more and more depressed because you are constantly finding something that is wrong with you. To get over this feeling of low self worth, you have to start focusing somewhere else. Do something for others, take up a hobby (this is a golden tip btw) or follow a dream that you have cherished for a long time. Taking your mind of yourself is the first step towards eliminating low self esteem.
People who experience low self esteem, usually have had some episode of childhood trauma in their lives such a sexual abuse. But in several cases even things like physical beating or constant comparison to an older or a younger sibling or any other family member by the parents could have been the reason behind low self esteem in a person. From a very young age the perspective is pushed in to their minds that they are of little or no value and everybody else is much better.
This constant comparison leads a person to believe that he or she is indeed worth nothing and thus the seeds of low self esteem are sown. Even when they grow up they assume that they have no purpose in life and whatever they do, there will always be someone who can do it better than themselves. In spite of boosting their spirit it can be difficult to convince them that they might actually be good at something. Although they have a sense of low self worth, these people are often remarkably difficult to convince otherwise and they are quite confident about their own opinions about themselves.
