Adequately insulate pipes that are prone to becoming cold during the winter months, such as pipes that reside in attics or exterior walls. Insulation can be wrapped around pipes, and is available at any hardware store. Proper insulation will save your pipes from any damage, and as an added bonus, your hot water will stay a lot hotter as it travels from the water heater.

Don't give a plumber the total bill payment upfront; pay them only when they have finished the job. A plumber might ask you for part of the money before starting the job but you should never pay more than half. It is a good thing to know the plumber did his job as he agreed to before he get's all of his money.

Whenever you work outdoors for a prolonged period of time, take a break in a place where you will not be exposed to the sun. Exposure to direct sunlight can be very dangerous, so don't work so hard that you forget to take breaks.

You have not choice in the matter of what plumber is scheduled sometimes, but you should still research different plumbers online. If your insurance company has just scheduled someone for you, checking out their website and customer feedback and reviews still gives the ability to be ready for them comfortably when they arrive.

Avoid using drain openers that contain chemicals while attempting to unclog the drain. Many chemicals in drain openers are hazardous to your health. If they come in contact with your skin, they can burn you or cause other health problems. If you must use them, wear long sleeved shirts and gloves.

If you notice water dripping into the walls of your home, you should immediately turn off the water supply and contact a plumber. This type of leak is not something to play around with, as it can cause numerous serious problems. A lot of these problems have the potential to cause mold or mildew that is harmful to you, and it can even flood your house.
