Horrible as it may sound criminals frequently go after vulnerable seniors. Predators are searching for easy victims, they often believe they can take advantage of elderly individuals. Therefore it is vital for seniors to practice theses useful self protection instructions.

Avoid Trouble

For starters the most basic self protection guidelines seniors can practice is to just show self confidence. Because criminals are seeking out victims who come across as timid, they are far less likely to be targeted than people who look confident and on the ball. Elderly people who talk with purpose, who keep their eyes alert rather than shuffling feet or staring down are simply not as attractive as targets. Try to, walk with other people, or at least keep within venues where large crowds are present. Predators are unlikely to attack if there are crowds nearby.

If you go out shopping, remember to park as close to your destination as possible, and always park in a well-lit spot. Muggers operate in dark areas where there aren't many others in the area so they won't have witnesses. Women ought to keep a close eye on their purses, but it isn’t necessarily a good idea to put the strap around the neck. Stealing a purse is quite common, and attackers might knock you over to get your handbag. When you are finished shopping, ensure your hands aren't overly full with packages, and have your car keys in hand upon walking to your car so you are ready to enter and drive away immediately.

Avoid A Confrontation

Think about this: say you were endangered in a public place, how would you respond?

Your reaction is often what prevents you from being the victim or avoiding a potentially dangerous encounter.

One of the best ways to dissuade an assailant from following through with an assault is to get assisitance. You’ll have safety in numbers, because a crook does not want witnesses who may be able to describe them to law enforcement officers. If there are people near by, call for assistance, or shout for bystanders to dial 911.

Just yelling for help doesn't always work. So it is good idea to carry something that will really grab a person’s attention. Consider a personal alarm. This is a self defense device that gives off an ear splitting siren that quickly attracts help. Such an alarm will be noticed by anyone nearby, and alerts bystanders of the need for assistance.

Worst Case Scenarios

It can happen that, despite our best efforts, a criminal will set their mind on attacking and nothing can prevent it.

A senior safety self defense class will provide a few simple, and very effective techniques which are intended to catch an attacker off guard and give a chance to escape. There are all sorts of personal defense classes, including courses in defense using things the average person might usually have on their person. Some seniors have even been taught how to turn their walking canes into effective weapons.

Seniors might also elect to use a non lethal self defense weapon.

It is important to do everything possible to stay away from touble and prevent a confrontation, butit is also important to acknowledge that if an assailant is carrying a gun, knife or any lethal weapon, Your best plan is to cooperate. There may be a loss of money or personal stuff, but why bother risking life and limb.
