So many people think that the only way to lose weight is through aerobic exercise. Many people, including myself, have experienced fast weight loss by incorporating anaerobic training into our fitness routine.

Many people are unclear exactly what anaerobic training actually is. If you consider that the term 'aerobic' means 'with air', then anaerobic means the opposite, or ' without air'.

When you take part in aerobic training, the body uses air (read oxygen) to sustain energy to the muscles. This allows you to perform sustained exercise for a long period of time. When performing within your 'aerobic' range, you can often hold a conversation, and don't get puffed out too quickly. Anaerobic training, on the other hand, does not use oxygen as the fuel source for the muscles. This means that you can perform the exercise at a high intensity, but only for a short period of time.

A good example could be weight training. Consider how it differs from say, a 40 minute run. During the running within your aerobic range, the body utilizes oxygen and carbohydrates from within the body to fuel the activity. After the run, your body may utilize a little fat to replenish the carbohydrate stores that have been used up. This will provide successful weight loss over a period of time.

I have been a runner for a number of years, and it takes a lot of running for me to shed much weight at all. Hours and hours per week seemed to result in very meager weight loss. When I introduced strength training to my weekly routine the results were very encouraging and steady weight loss began.

But why does this happen? The body reacts very differently to strength training, and it is a great thing to add to your fat loss program. It takes a lot of energy to build muscles, and to maintain them. Consistent weight training with sensible weight loads. If you strength train consistently, your body is forced to use fat reserves to provide usable energy. The muscles grow and tone even whilst you are asleep, and the fat loss continues for many hours after the training has finished.

It also requires more calories to fuel muscles, so if you can add extra muscle mass, you get the benefits of additional calorie expenditure even when you are going about your normal daily routine.

So if you are keen to shed belly fat fast, add some weight training to your exercise program. Combine this with a good healthy diet and you'll be amazed at the results.
