Accelerated EMT course

EMTs or Emergency Medical Technicians are experts that establish a vital role in the healthcare process. They're the ones that arrive first at the individual's location and perform first aid. Most of the time patient's lives depend on the EMTs as they are the people that provide assistance before they go to a health care facility to receive more sophisticated help.

To go to an accelerated EMT course a trainee must be a high school graduate. There are various types of accelerated EMT courses, each one slightly more specific and advanced compared to the other. The time required to complete typically differs depending on the state.

EMT-B course

During the course, EMTs will learn specific aspects of symptom recognition, health care tactics and processes. With the EMT Basic course it is expected that EMTs have a fast response whenever they first arrive at the patient. All symptoms have to be quickly diagnosed and immediate action taken to stabilize the individual. The EMT-Basic course consists of in depth training on performing physical exams, administering oxygen and medication, taking care of broken bones, using semi-automatic defibrillation together with air passage maintenance. They can also deal with unexpected emergency childbirth in addition to severe bleeding.

An accelerate EMT B course will take 120 hours, usually condensed into three hours a day during 2 months. The time required can vary among states.

EMT-I course

An EMT Intermediate course provides basic health care training plus some more advanced emergency care strategies and methods. An intermediate EMT will be able to perform administration of intravenous fluids, use advance air passage techniques and devices and also deal with several kinds of trauma and use a manual defibrillator. The EMT with an intermediate program will have ample training to provide the individual with a number of complex procedures which will likely save their life .

An accelerated EMT-I course will take about 80 hours and includes a review of EMT basic skills.

EMT advance/paramedic course

Based on the state, an advanced EMT can be considered a paramedic or not. A number of states consider it an intermediate level between the EMT Intermediate and EMT Paramedic program, others consider it an EMT Paramedic.

An EMT Advanced or Paramedic course teaches the EMTs to assist in the most complicated health care scenarios. With this particular course EMTs are able to perform the following actions:

* Trauma Assessment
* Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
* Bleeding Control
* Dressing and Bandaging
* Splinting
* Endotracheal Intubation
* Pharmacology
* Electrocardiology (ECG or EKG)
* Intravenous Cannulation (IV)
* Spinal Immobilization
* Defibrillation
* Dressing and Bandaging

An accelerated EMT advanced/paramedic course normally takes about 140 hours but it may vary between states.

While accelerated EMT courses may be finished in a short period of time, they are very demanding and provide a high level of training, both theory and practice. Assisting individuals in an emergency requires a lot of health care skills and knowledge. EMTs are the ones that must have sharp eyes to recognize symptoms and cold blood to take action fast and accurately.
