The first slow cooker was a good sized cast iron pot suspended over a fireplace. These functioned for hundreds and even thousands of years, the downside of this was, you had to keep the fire stoked up and spend a good deal of time stirring the pot ingredients to provide good eatable food in the end.

In this day and age the slow cooker or crock pot cooker can be described as god send to everybody with a busy schedule like mothers with young kids or professional men and women on the go, overall it permits you to eat as soon as you get home from the days toil and loosen up with very little washing up.

When cooking you merely place the ingredients in and set the timer and forget about it until it actually is ready, some 4 to 8 hours dependent on timing.
Differences from the slow cooker and the crock pot is the slow cooker has got the heating unit in the base and boasts a transparent glass lid when you are cooking you can see how things are going, but because the heating unit in the bottom you still have to stir the food every once in awhile in order to avoid the food sticking, a lot like an electric frying pan.

The slow cooker crock pot is manufactured by placing heating elements inside the double skinned construction and then a removable "porceline Crock Pot" dish fits neatly inside the body and incorporates a tight fitting lid; this will give even cooking at low temperatures.

There are many different makes in the market today so picking the one for you can be difficult, some recommendations when shopping for; ensure you get the perfect size (ranging up to 7.5 quartz usable volume) for the number of people or family which will use it frequently, be sure to buy one with warm and high and low settings, (low means 4hrs and high 8 hrs cooking time), several of the higher end ones have hourly timing up to 26 hours, the crock must be dishwasher, microwave and hob friendly, and buy one with a decent guarantee, some reputable companies give even more than 1 years guarantee, you need to look for 2 years or more.
Be ready to spend in between $30 for a basic model and $200+ for a high quality beauty.
